Drive Safe are proud to offer driving lessons for under 17's
We have an off road area at Waltham Airfield near Grimsby. The area is the old World War 2 runway measuring 1.14 miles giving us plenty of space to teach the required skills of how to learn to drive. We would recommend the starting age for this facility to be around 16 and a half. However our insurances do allow us to start teaching from the age of 14 should you wish to try out a taster lesson and get an even earlier start.
Drive Safe under 17 driving lessons are aimed at teaching
the skills early to the pupil so that the day they turn seventeen they
will know most of the skills and take to the road with confidence.
Obviously this is going to be a great advantage as the skills required for
driving safely come to many of us a second nature once we have been
driving for a while, you only have to watch an experienced driver to see
how easy it seems to be able to check the mirrors, indicate, slow down,
change gear, observe the every day hazards and generally perform a smooth
drive. All of these things come with time, practice and experience.
Imagine getting a head start on all of this in the safety of off road
tuition.
All of the lessons given will be with a DSA registered instructor. Once the pupil turns 17 they will normally be kept with the same instructor and car so that they are in a familiar vehicle when able to drive on the road.
The aim of our off road facility is to prepare the pupil so that they may take their driving test as near to turning 17 as possible. (You may apply for a provisional licence up to 3 months prior to your 17th birthday)
We have marked out most of the familiar road markings such as Junctions, One Way streets, Mini-Roundabouts, Larger Roundabouts, Centre and Hazard Lines etc that you would see on the normal roads. We have also marked out all of the required reverse manoeuvres so that the pupil can learn as much as they can before taking to the highways. It is always worth remembering that whilst we try to make this facility as realistic as possible there will not be any other road users around so this will be the biggest obstacle to master once on the road.
The
pupil will be taught as if he/she was having their first lesson on the
road. You can see what will be taught by clicking
here
Lessons are best taught in 2 hour blocks however the minimum time for tuition is 1.5 hour blocks and can be weekly (if your close to 17), fortnightly (around 16 and half) or monthly (around 16) and will normally be held on a Saturday or Sunday. If you are looking to have just a one off lesson quite simply to learn how to make a car move and have a drive around the airfield again 1.5 hours is the minimum time allocated for this type of tuition.
Pupils can be picked up from home but the travelling time to and from the airfield will be chargeable at the normal standard rate. It is much more beneficial if someone can drop the pupil off and pick them up after the lesson. Parents, friends or relatives are more than welcome to stay and watch the lesson in progress. Should you wish to book or find out more about our off road tuition course please feel free to call us on any of the above numbers.
